My Review

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and director George Sidney (“Bye Bye Birdie” 1963) put together the classic stage play “Show Boat” for the big screen. This third big screen version (after 1929 and 1936) features the enormous talents of Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson vocalizing the songs written by Jerome Kern (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics).

Filmed in Technicolor, “Show Boat” was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Cinematography (Charles Rosher) and Best Musical Scoring (Conrad Salinger and Adolph Deutsch). It was adapted from the 1927 stage play by Kern and Hammerstein, and the 1926 novel by Edna Ferber.

The supporting cast behind Keel and Grayson includes Ave Gardner, Joe E. Brown, Agnes Moorehead, Marge Champion, Gower Champion, William Warfield, Robert Sterling, Leif Erickson, and Regis Toomey as the sheriff.

“Show Boat” was an enormous hit at the box office for producer Arthur Freed and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was the second highest grossing picture of 1951, after the top cash-cow of the year, “Quo Vadis,” also from MGM.
