My Review

Doris Day had a spectacular feature film debut in “Romance on the High Seas.” The big band singer was given plenty of musical numbers to perform, including “It’s Magic,” one of her more memorable hits. The song, written by Jule Styne (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics), was one of two Oscar nominations for the film, along with the musical score by Ray Heindorf.

Day’s presence in the film turned out to be a good selection by director Michael Curtiz; she went on to a movie career that lasted for two decades. Co-stars include Jack Carson, Janis Paige, Don DeFore, Oscar Levant, S. Z. Sakall, and Fortunio Bonanova. The screenplay by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein, and I. A. L. Diamond provided the actors with an abundance of great dialogue, ensuring smooth sailing at the box office for “Romance on the High Seas” from executive producer Michael Curtiz and Warner Bros. Pictures.
