My Review

“Fort Apache” is a post-Civil War western about the clash between two Army officers over the treatment of Indians at Fort Apache, Arizona. John Wayne and Henry Fonda star in this film well-directed by John Ford (“My Darling Clementine” 1946) from an excellent screenplay by Frank S. Nugent. The film’s location shootings were shot in picturesque Monument Valley, Utah, with outstanding cinematography by Archie Stout.

The supporting cast includes Shirley Temple, John Agar, Ward Bond, Mae Marsh, Victor MacLaglen, Pedro Armandariz, Dick Foran, Frank McGrath, Guy Kibbee, Irene Rich, Anna Lee, and Miguel Inclan as Cochise. At the time of filming, John Agar and Shirley Temple were married (1945-1950). The very watchable and entertaining “Fort Apache” was successful in theatrical release for producer John Ford, Argosy Pictures, and RKO Radio Pictures. It has been noted by film historians that this is the first motion picture to present an authentic and sympathetic view of Native Americans.
