My Review

“State of the Union” is a political drama film about an aircraft tycoon who decides to run for President, and reunites with his estranged wife at the urging of his unscrupulous campaign manager. But when the wife learns of the unethical maneuvers of the manager, she raises a fuss and the campaign is thrown into turmoil. Director Frank Capra (“It’s a Wonderful Life” 1946) instills his usual characteristics of civic responsibility, memorable characters, and fast-paced dialogue into the film.

The stars Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn add class and gravitas to the project; the story would not have been the same without them. This was their fifth film together. Co-stars include Angela Lansbury, Van Johnson, Adolphe Menjou, Lewis Stone, Howard Smith, Charles Dingle, Maidel Turner, Carl Switzer, Margaret Hamilton, and Charles Lane. The watchable “State of the Union” was modestly successful at the box office for producer Frank Capra, Liberty Films, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
