My Review

The seaside town of Amity is once again troubled by sharks in “Jaws 2.” Roy Scheider as the police chief thinks he spots the return of the familiar ocean predator from five year earlier. The mayor disagrees and fires him, with the drama proceeding from there. Director Jeannot Szwarc put together a tightly directed sequel to Steven Spielberg’s original “Jaws” (1975), from a decent script by Carl Gottlieb and Howard Sackler.

The three main cast members returned to their roles: Roy Scheider as Police Chief Martin Brody, Murray Hamilton as Mayor Larry Vaugh, and Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody. Co-stars include Joseph Mascolo, Jeffrey Kramer, Colin Wilcox, Ann Dusenberry, Mark Gruner, Susan French, Barry Coe, John Dukakis, and Billy Van Zandt as Bob. The watchable and exciting “Jaws 2” was quite a big hit at the box office for producer Richard D. Zanuck, Zanuck/Brown Company, and Universal Pictures.

The extraordinarily talented John Williams once again penned the musical score to “Jaws 2” as he had done for the original film. Two more sequels were later released to continue to keep us scared of going into the water: “Jaws 3-D” (1983) and “Jaws: The Revenge” (1987). Neither Steven Spielberg nor Peter Benchley (screenwriter of the first film and novel) returned to the sequels in any capacity.
