My Review

“A Fistful of Dollars” is a western film featuring Clint Eastwood as a gunfighter who wanders into a Mexican town where a power struggle between the sheriff and three outlaws is in progress. Eastwood’s “man with no name” anti-hero character plays the two sides against each other with entertaining results. Italian director-screenwriter Sergio Leone pioneered the “spaghetti western” with this film, which is characterized by anti-heroes for protagonists, outrageously evil villains, lots of shooting, desert landscapes (filmed in Italy and Spain with outstanding cinematography by Massimo Dallamano), and a haunting movie score composed by Ennio Morricone.

The mostly European cast behind Eastwood includes Marianne Koch, Gian Maria Volonte, W. Lukschy, Sieghardt Rupp, Joseph Egger, Antonio Prieto, Pepe Calvo, Margherita Lozano, Daniel Martin, Benny Reeves, Mario Brega, Nino del Arco, Bruno Carotenuto, and Aldo Sembreli. The very watchable low-budget original spaghetti western “A Fistful of Dollars” was a big hit across Europe and America for production companies Unidis (Italy), Constantin Film (West Germany), and Izaro Films (Spain).

Clint Eastwood was launched into international superstardom as a result of starring in “A Fistful Of Dollars,” which was rapidly followed by two sequels “For a Few Dollars More” (1965) and “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” (1966).
