“The Narrow Margin” is a film noir crime drama movie about an LAPD detective and his partner protecting a mob boss’ widow from her late husband’s goons traveling on a train from Chicago to Los Angeles so she can testify before a grand jury. There are plenty of thrills, chills, and spills along the way in this RKO Radio Pictures release.
Cast members deliver good performances including Charles McGraw and Don Beddoe as the policemen and Marie Windsor as the widow. Others include Jacqueline White, Gordon Gebert, Queenie Leonard, David Clarke, Peter Brocco, Peter Virgo, and Paul Maxey.
“The Narrow Margin” has good production values thanks to director Richard O. Fleishcher (“20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” 1954) and screenwriters Earl Fenton, Martin Goldsmith, and Jack Leonard. They were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Motion Picture Story. A remake with the same name from TriStar Pictures was released in 1990 with Gene Hackman and Anne Archer.
