My Review

“Ivanhoe” is the story of one of King Richard the Lionheart’s loyal knights, Wilfred of Ivanhoe, going on a search for his monarch when Richard does not return from the Crusades. MGM brought out some of their big stars for this top rate production, including Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine, and George Sanders. They all deliver great performances guided by the capable hand of director Richard Thorpe (“Vengeance Valley” 1951), who also worked with Liz on “A Date with Judy” back in 1948.

Producer Pandro S. Berman and screenwriters Eneas MacKenzie, Noel Langley, and Marguerite Roberts ensured great production values. It paid off with three Oscar nods for Best Picture, Best Music, and Best Cinematography, with Freddie Young filming “Ivanhoe” in Technicolor. Co-stars include Emlyn Williams, Robert Douglas, Finlay Currie, Francis De Wolff, and Sebastian Cabot as the clerk of Copmanhurst. “Ivanhoe” was very successful at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was based on the 1819 novel by Sir Walter Scott.
