My Review

“Belles on Their Toes” is a family comedy film continuing the story of the Gilbreth family of “Cheaper by the Dozen” (1950). The sequel shows the struggles of Mrs. Gilbreth to provide for her twelve children after the passing of her husband. Director Henry Levin (“The Family Secret” 1951) capably put together this picture with Henry Ephron and Phoebe Ephron penning the script, based on the 1950 novel of the same name by Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and Frank B. Gilbreth Jr.

Myrna Loy returns as Mrs. Lillian Moller Gilbreth, as does Jeanne Crain as the oldest daughter. Co-stars include Debra Paget, Jeffrey Hunter, Edward Arnold, Hoagy Carmichael, Barbara Bates, Robert Arthur, and Verna Felton. There were uncredited cameos by Martin Milner, Merry Anders, and Clifton Webb as Frank B. Gilbreth. The enjoyable and watchable “Belles on Their Toes” was a modest hit in theatrical release for 20th Century Fox.
