My Review

“Road to Rio” is one of the more high quality films in the “Road” movie series starring Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour. The story has Crosby and Hope stowing away on a cruise ship headed for Rio de Janeiro after they got into trouble in a local New Orleans circus. (Bob Hope had an aborted high wire act.) All thanks to expert direction by Norman McLeod (“Jackass Mail” 1942) and a laugh-filled screenplay by Edmund Beloin and Jack Rose.

The seven “Road” pictures are famous for the stars’ deviation from the script, and this number five is no exception. Crosby and Hope provide plenty of adlibs. There are also five musical numbers, the best being “You Don’t Have to Know the Language” featuring Bing and the Andrews Sisters. Gale Sondergaard appears as Lamour’s devious aunt who hypnotizes her to undermine Bob and Bing.

Other cast members are Jerry Colonna, Joseph Vitale, George Meeker, Frank Puglia, Stanley Andrews, Marquita Rivera, and the Wiere Brothers in hilarious comic roles as musicians working with Hope and Crosby. All part of the watchable fun in “Road to Rio,” a hit at the box office for Bing Crosby Productions, Hope Enterprises, and Paramount Pictures.
