“Beat the Devil” is a drama film telling the story of a group of adventurers waiting in an Italian port to travel to Africa to search for valuable uranium deposits. Director John Huston (“The African Queen” 1951) put together a tedious, confusing, and poorly paced movie which seems haphazardly thrown together. This is due to the fact that John Huston and Truman Capote wrote the screenplay as the film was being shot.
The motion picture has no shortage of star power which did not help the film’s quality. The cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida (in her English language film debut), Robert Morley, Peter Lorre, Bernard Lee, Ivor Bernard, Marco Tulli, Saro Urzi, Edward Underdown, Juan de Landa, and Aldo Silvani as the restaurant owner.
The mostly unwatchable “Beat the Devil” was a flop at the box office for producer John Huston, Romulus Films, Santana Pictures Corporation, and United Artists. The big name Hollywood stars could not help “Beat the Devil” from going to the devil.
