Great stars, an exciting storyline, and beautiful location shoots in Africa in Technicolor are all factors in MGM’s “Mogambo.” Director John Ford (“Stagecoach” 1939) superbly handled an all-star cast in this story about a group of people on an African safari with loads of romantic drama and intrigue to keep viewers tuned in for the 115 minute running time. The top-rate screenplay was written by John Lee Mahin.
The cast includes veteran Clark Gable and the youthful beauties Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly on board, both nominated for Oscars (Gardner for Best Actress and Kelly for Best Supporting Actress). This film was a remake of “Red Dust,” a 1932 movie featuring Gable, Jean Harlow, and Mary Astor. The supporting cast of this 1953 version includes Donald Sinden, Philip Stainton, Eric Pohlman, Denis O’Dea, and Laurance Naismith as the skipper. The watchable melodramatic adventure “Mogambo” was popular at the box office for producer Sam Zimbalist and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
