My Review

“Hondo” is a western drama about an Indian scout who comes upon a homesteader and her son, and takes on a job doing chores. He offers to guide them to safety as the American treaty with the local Apaches has expired. High drama proceeds from there, well directed by John Farrow (“His Kind of Woman” 1951), the father of famous actress Mia Farrow. It was based on a 1952 short story “The Gift of Cochise” by Louis L’Amour.

John Wayne stars in the lead role of Hondo Lane, the sturdy Indian scout. He has good chemistry with Geraldine Page as the widow lady homesteader and Lee Aaker as her son. Co-stars include James Arness, Ward Bond, Michael Pate, Rodolfo Acosta, Leo Gordon, Paul Fix, Frank McGrath, Rayford Barnes, and Chuck Robertson. The very watchable “Hondo” was a hit at the box office for producer John Wayne, Batjac Productions, Wayne-Fellows Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
