My Review

“Cabin Boy” is a comedy movie about a spoiled rich kid whose plans for a cruise to Hawaii goes awry and he finds himself on a fishing boat that stays out on the ocean for three months. He tries to convince the captain and crew to drop him off in Paradise, but instead they make him the boat’s cabin boy. The lame comedy proceeds from there, poorly executed by director-screenwriter Adam Resnick. The laughs are few and far between.

Chris Elliot plays the title role of Nathaniel Mayweather in a very weak fashion. He doesn’t rise above his small comedy roles he used to perform on David Letterman’s late night show. Co-stars include Andy Richter, Rich Brinkley, Brain Doyle-Murray, James Gammon, Brion James, Melora Walters, Ann Magunson, Russ Tamblyn, Alex Nevil, Bob Elliot (Chris’ father who plays his character’s padre), Alfred Molina as the professor, Rikki Lake as the boat’s figurehead, and Earl Hofert as the old salt in the village. Hofert is in reality David Letterman, making his motion picture debut in this cameo.

The unwatchable “Cabin Boy” was a flop at the box office for producer Tim Burton, Touchstone Pictures, Tim Burton Productions, Skellington Productions, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company. Elliot was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star. “Cabin Boy” was nominated for Worst Picture at the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.
