After fourteen years in an island prison, he escapes and manages to get his hands on a hidden fortune, whose location was revealed to him by a fellow inmate. He then proceeds to exact revenge on his persecutors. This excellent version of an old story, based on an 1844 novel by Alexandre Dumas, was written and directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patelliere.
The film is filmed almost completely in the French language, and stars Pierre Niney, Bastien Bouillon, Anais Demoustier, Anamaria Varolomei, and Laurent Lafitte. They deliver marvelous performances, in a film with outstanding production values. It is worth viewing even for English-speaking audiences, with the English subtitles. “The Count of Monte Cristo” has been a huge hit at box offices around the world, and was the second highest grossing film in France in 2024.
