My Review

“Three Coins in the Fountain” is a romantic comedy-drama about three American women who visit Italy, each throwing coins into Rome’s famous Trevi Fountain, all making a wish for romance. Find out what happens in this glossy, fast-moving picture well directed by Jean Negulesco (“Johnny Belinda” 1948) from a marvelous screenplay by John Patrick. It was adapted from the 1952 novel “Coins in the Fountain” by John H. Secondari.

The talented all-star cast deliver in the performance department, led off by Dorothy McGuire, Jean Peters, and Maggie McNamara. Co-stars include Clifton Webb, Louis Jourdan, Rossano Brazzi, Cathleen Nesbitt, and Howard St. John and Kathryn Givney as Mr. and Mrs. Burgoyne. Another star of the show seems to be the stunning CinemaScope wide screen cinematography of beautiful Rome, Venice, and the Italian countryside.

Milton R. Krasner won an Oscar for Best Cinematography, with a second Academy Award for the film going to Jule Styne (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics) for Best Song. That would be “Three Coins in the Fountain” performed by Frank Sinatra, a big hit for him on the record charts and an enduring standard of the 1950’s. The very watchable “Three Coins in the Fountain” was a huge hit in theatrical release for producer Sol C. Siegel and 20th Century Fox.
