My Review

Frank Sinatra gives a riveting performance as a hired assassin who holds a family hostage because their home is in the perfect location to kill the President of the United States in “Suddenly.” Sinatra also holds the audience hostage in this fast-moving film with a 77 minute running time in his first role as the heavy of a motion picture.

Director Lewis Allen (“Chicago Deadline” 1949) was focused as he handled the large cast and complex storyline in the film. Richard Sale wrote an entertaining script, adapted from his own story in a 1943 issue of “Blue Book” magazine. “Suddenly” was a black-and-white film from United Artists.

The supporting cast includes Sterling Hayden as the sheriff, Nancy Gates, James Gleason, Kim Charney as the captive family, Willis Bouchey as the Secret Service agent, and Paul Frees, Christopher Dark, James O’Hara, Kem Dibbs, Paul Wexler, and Charles Smith as Bebop.
