“The Good Liar” is an engrossing story of a con artist who runs into unexpected problems when he tries to trick a widow out of her fortune. Veteran actors Helen Mirren and Ian McKellan are a pleasure to watch in this expertly produced cat-and-mouse game.
Producer-director Bill Condon (“Chicago” 2002) and screenwriter Jeffrey Hatcher put together this gem adapted from Nicholas Searle’s 2015 novel of the same name. Warner Bros. and its New Line Cinema division stay true to Searle’s English-flavored storyline; it has the feel of a UK motion picture.
The formidable supporting cast includes Jim Carter, well known to television audiences as Mr. Carson of “Downton Abbey,” Russell Tovey, Mark Lewis Jones, Laurie Davidson, Phil Dunster, Tunji Kasim, Neil Williams. The watchable “The Good Liar” is a spell-binding view from start to finish.
