My Review

“Superman III” tells the story of a big corporation hiring a computer genius to seize control of a weather satellite to destroy Columbia’s coffee crops. Superman thwarts the plot, but the villains use contaminated kryptonite to poison him with some very serious consequences. The drama proceeds from there, adequately directed by Richard Lester (“Superman II” 1980), from the screenplay by David Newman and Leslie Newman. It is obvious that the quality from the first two Superman movies had dropped for film number three. The box office receipts dropped accordingly for producer Pierre Spengler, Dovemead Ltd., and Warner Bros. Pictures.

The cast includes Christopher Reeve as Superman/Clark Kent, Richard Pryor as a bumbling computer expert, Jackie Cooper as Perry White, Mark McClure as Jimmy Olson, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Annette O’Toole as Lana Lang, Robert Vaughn as the antagonist industrialist, Annie Ross and Pamela Stephenson as Vaughn proteges, Gavan O’Herlihy as Clark’s friend from Smallville, and Frank Oz in a cameo as a surgeon. Annette O’Toole later starred as Martha Kent on television’s “Smallville” for ten years, 2001-2011. A sequel to “Superman III” would be released in 1987 called “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.”
