My Review

“How to Train Your Dragon” is an animated fantasy movie about a teenage boy in a Viking town where fighting dragons is a way of life. He bucks the trend by befriending a young dragon who is injured, which incurs the wrath of his father and other town folk, who consider dragons the enemy. And, indeed, dragons do kill any humans they can get their hands on. So the heavy drama proceeds from there, well managed by directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. They penned the script with Will Davies, adapted from the 2003 novel of the same name by Cressida Cowell.

The voice cast includes Jay Baruchel as the Viking lad, Randy Thom as the dragon, Gerard Butler as the boy’s father, as well as America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, David Tennant, T. J. Miller, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Robin Atkin Downes, Philip McGrade, Kieron Elliot, and Ashley Jensen. The watchable “How to Train Your Dragon” was a big hit at the box office for producer Bonnie Arnold, DreamWorks Animation, and Paramount Pictures.

It was nominated for two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Musical Score (John Powell). Two sequels were later released: “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014) and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” (2019). A live-action remake is scheduled in summer of 2025.
