My Review

The Best Picture of 1954 is…..”On the Waterfront.” This crime drama film vividly depicts the rough-and-tumble existence of longshoremen in a mob-controlled union. Director Elia Kazan (“The Sea of Grass” 1947) put together this marvelous film with stunning performances by cast members. The well written screenplay was penned by Budd Schulberg.

Marlon Brando leads the film as Terry Malloy, the goon-turned-informant. Eva Marie Saint made her film debut as Edie Doyle. Both won Oscars for their efforts. Co-stars include Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, Leif Erickson, Pat Henning, Tony Galento, John F. Hamilton, Fred Gwynne, Martin Balsam, Katherine MacGregor, Pat Hingle, Nehemiah Persoff, Rudy Bond, and James Westerfield as Big Mac.

The film was nominated for twelve Academy Awards, winning eight: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Brando), Best Supporting Actress (Saint), Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography/Black-and-White (Boris Kaufman). Leonard Bernstein was nominated for Best Musical Score. Malden, Cobb, and Steiger were all nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The very watchable “On the Waterfront” was a huge hit at the box office for producer Sam Spiegel, Horizon Pictures, and Columbia Pictures.
