Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer hit the jackpot with the public and critics alike in Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn’s third film “Without Love.” It is the story of a man and a woman who get married on a platonic basis, believing that they would avoid problems like arguments, jealousy, etc. They soon fall in love anyway, with humor ensuing.
Director Harold S. Bucquet (“Young Dr. Kildare” 1938) put together a smooth and slick production from the screenplay by Donald Ogden Stewart, which was based on a 1942 play of the same name by Philip Barry.
It is obvious by this third outing of Spence and Kate that the pair have great on-screen chemistry, maybe partly resulting from their off-screen relationship. (Their first two were “Woman of the Year” and “Keeper of the Flame,” both 1942.)
Co-stars from MGM’s talented bench include Lucille Ball, Keenan Wynn, Carl Edmund, Patricia Morison, Felix Bressart, Emily Massey, and Gloria Grahame as the flower girl, only her second movie appearance in a career that lasted until 1982.
