Producer-director Roland Emmerich (“White House Down” 2013) and screenwriter Wes Tooke did a remake of the 1976 film “Midway.” It tells the story of the Battle of Midway which took place June 4-7, 1942, a crucial conflict in World War II that took place six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.
On the positive side, the new “Midway” has marvelous special effects and a more balance view of U. S. and Japan efforts. However, this version does not have the gravitas of the older motion picture. The original benefited from superior writing and star power that included Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, et al.
The cast of 2019’s “Midway” includes Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Mandy Moore, Nick Jonas, and Jake T. Weber. This nonetheless watchable picture from independent Lionsgate was a modest hit at the box office, barely making a profit against the cost of this big budget production.
