My Review

“The Fast and the Furious” is an action film about a Los Angeles street car racing aficionado who becomes a suspect in big-rig hijacking. He takes a newcomer into his group not knowing that he is an undercover LAPD investigator. Sparks fly from there in this finely crafted action thriller from director Rob Cohen (“The Rat Pack” 1998). The film features great production values, exciting car chase scenes, and a superior script by Gary Scott Thompson, Eric Bergquist, and David Ayer. The excellent filming around Los Angeles and Southern California was supervised by cinematographer Ericson Core.

The stars in this well-casted film includes Vin Diesel as professional street racer Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as the LAPD cop Brian O’Connor, Michelle Rodriguez as Dom’s girl friend, Jordana Brewster as Dom’s sister Mia, as well as Rick Yune, Chad Lindberg, Johnny Strong, Matt Schulze, Ted Levine, Thom Barry, Noel Gugliemi, Ja Rule, Vyto Ruginis, and Reggie Lee. Producer Neal H. Moritz and director Rob Cohen made cameo appearances. These were breakthrough roles for Diesel, Walker, and Rodriguez.

“The Fast and the Furious” was a massive hit at the box office for producer Neal H. Moritz and Universal Pictures. It spawned numerous sequels over the next twenty-plus years with no end in sight. The first sequel was “2 Fast, 2 Furious” (2003). The film was based on “The Fast and the Furious,” a 1954 crime drama B movie starring John Ireland and Dorothy Malone, produced by Roger Corman.
