“The Royal Hotel” is a psychological thriller film about two young American backpackers on a journey through rural Australia who take a temporary job at a remote hotel. Soon they find themselves trapped in an unnerving and scary situation which is rapidly spinning out of control. Australian film director Kitty Green (“The Assistant” 2019) does a good job of building suspense throughout the movie, despite gaps here-and-there of slow-moving dialogue and action. She co-wrote the lucid script with Oscar Redding.
The cast is headed by Julia Garner and Jessica Henwick as the two travelers. They are convincing in the roles, as is most of the rest of the actors. They include Hugo Weaving, Herbert Nordrum, Bree Bain, Ursula Yovich, James Frecheville, Daniel Henshall, Baykali Ganambarr, and Toby Wallace as Matty. “The Royal Hotel” was an independent film from See-Saw Films, Screen Australia, South Australian Film Corporation, Screen NSW, HanWay Films, Cross City Films, and Transmission Films.
