Gene Tierney was at the height of her career in the suspense-filled crime drama “Laura.” Dana Andrews plays a Manhattan police detective investigating the murder of a beautiful advertising executive. He becomes increasingly obsessed with Laura Hunt as his investigation proceeds. Director Otto Preminger (“Margin for Error” 1943) held a tight reign on this film noir, building incredible suspense as the storyline progressed.
The co-stars with Tierney and Andrews includes Clifton Webb, Vincent Price, and Judith Anderson. The superior screenplay was written by Jay Dratler, Samuel Hoffenstein, and Betty Reinhardt, based on the 1943 detective novel of the same name by Vera Caspary. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one for Best Cinematography/Black and White (Joseph LaShelle).
This almost perfect movie noir “Laura” was a success in theatrical release for producer Otto Preminger and 20th Century Fox. In 1950, Preminger reunited Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney in another of his films called “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”
