“Slightly Scarlett” is a noir crime drama about a crime boss’ associate who gets a woman released from prison whose sister works for a reform political candidate. He figures this will throw a monkey wrench into the man’s campaign, but the situation changes when he has a falling out with his crime boss and falls in love with the released prisoner. The complex melodrama proceeds from there.
Director Allan Dwan (“Cattle Queen of Montana” 1954) put together a watchable motion picture with good production values, from a lucid screenplay by Robert Blees. The cast includes John Payne, Rhonda Fleming, Arlene Dahl, Kent Taylor, Ted De Corsia, Lance Fuller, Buddy Baer (uncle of Max Baer Jr.), and Ellen Corby in an uncredited part. Corby later became famous as Esther “Grandma” Walton on the television series “The Waltons” (1972-1980).
“Slightly Scarlett” was a production of Benedict Bogeaus Productions and RKO Radio Pictures. It was filmed in Technicolor, maybe in part to highlight the strawberry blonde hair color of stars Fleming and Dahl.
