My Review

“High Society” is a musical-romantic-comedy about a love triangle where Grace Kelly plays a woman engaged to be married (to John Lund), but is still in love with her former husband (Bing Crosby). Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm play a reporter and photographer, respectively, who enter the story and complicate matters. This musical remake of “The Philadelphia Story” (1940) was well-crafted by director Charles Walters (“The Tender Trap” 1955) and screenwriter John Patrick.

The cast includes Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Celeste Holm, John Lund, Lewis Calhern, Sidney Blackmer, and Louis Armstrong and His Band. This was Calhern’s final film role in a career that began in 1921 in the silent picture era at Paramount Pictures. “High Society” was also Grace Kelly’s last movie before her marriage to Prince Rainer III of Monaco to become the Princess Consort of Monaco. She went out with a bang, as this light-and-breezy movie “High Society” was a huge hit at the box office for Sol C. Siegel Productions, Bing Crosby Productions, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
