Movie star Karl Malden occupied the director’s chair once in his career for the legal drama “Time Limit.” He put together a watchable film with even pacing, telling the story of the trial of an Army major accused of collaborating with the North Koreans while he and his unit were held there in a prison camp during the Korean Conflict. This black-and-white movie had some success in theatrical release for producer-star Richard Widmark and United Artists.
The engrossing screenplay was written by Henry Denker, based on his 1956 play of the same name. The cast includes Richard Widmark as the prosecution, Richard Basehart as the accused, Dolores Michaels, June Lockhart, Carl Benton Reid, Martin Balsam, Rip Torn, James Douglas, and Khigh Dhiegh, who later became famous as the recurring character Wo Fat on “Hawaii 5-0” (1968-1980). June Lockhart also went on to television stardom in “Lassie” (1958-1964), “Lost in Space” (1965-1968), and “Petticoat Junction” (1969-1970).
