“Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison” is a World War II drama about a U. S. Marine corporal and a Roman Catholic Irish nun stranded on a South Pacific island. When Japanese soldiers invade, they must hide, and the heavy drama begins. Director John Huston (“The Maltese Falcon” 1941) put together this high quality picture adapted from Charles Shaw’s 1952 novel of the same name. He co-wrote the screenplay with John Lee Mahin.
Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum delivered outstanding performances in the lead roles. Kerr was one of two Academy Award nominations (Best Actress), along with Huston and Shaw for Best Screenplay. The small supporting cast includes Akira Ohno, Masao Ukon, S. Nakagawa, and I. Miynai. The watchable “Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison” was filmed in CinemaScope and was popular at the box office for producer Buddy Adler and 20th Century Fox.
