Director Jack Arnold (“Creature from the Black Lagoon” 1954) and screenwriter Richard Matheson put together a thought-provoking film called “The Incredible Shrinking Man.” It is the story of a man who begins to shrink in size due to exposure to a radioactive mist while on a boat at sea.
The script was adapted from Matheson’s 1956 novel of the same name. He also penned another scifi tome “I am Legend,” which had three movie versions over the years. “The Incredible Shrinking Man” has very good production values, and is considered a science fiction classic in recent years. The excellent special effects were designed by Clifford Stine, head of Universal Studios’ FX department. It was popular at the box office for Universal.
The cast includes Grant Williams in the title role, and Randy Stuart as his wife, William Schallert (“The Patty Duke Show” dad), Paul Langton (Leslie Harrington of TV’s “Peyton Place”), April Kent, Raymond Bailey, Frank Scannell, Helene Marshall, Diana Darrin, and Billy Curtis, who years before had an uncredited role as a Munchkin city father in “The Wizard of Oz” (1939). Orangey the cat had an uncredited role as Butch the Cat, who was quite a challenge to Williams’ character as he shrank in size.
