John Wayne always delivers the goods in the films he appears in, and “The Wings of Eagles” is no exception. Here the Duke portrays Frank “Spig” Wead (1895-1947), a pioneer in the U. S. Navy’s aviation program who later became a Hollywood screenwriter. Director John Ford (“The Searchers” 1956) put together a believable biopic from a lucid screenplay by Frank Fenton and William Wister Haines.
The supporting cast behind John Wayne includes Maureen O’Hara, Dan Dailey, Ward Bond, Ken Curtis, Edmund Lowe, James Todd, Barry Kelley, Sig Ruman, Willis Bouchet, Tig Andrews, Dorothy Jordan, and Kenneth Tobey, later star of the television series “Whirlybirds” (1957-1960). This would be Dorothy Jordan’s last film, in a career that began in 1929 with Fox Film Corporation. The watchable biopic “The Wings of Eagles” was popular at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
