My Review

Jerry Lewis began his solo career after his famous breakup with Dean Martin in “The Delicate Delinquent.” Lewis’ unique brand of comedy is on full display here as he plays a janitor who is mistaken for a gang member and is arrested with three juvenile delinquents. He is helped out by a policeman and a socialite, with the comedic misunderstandings proceeding from here. Director-screenwriter Don McGuire put together an entertaining comedy that is a good showcase for the talents and personality of Jerry Lewis.

The co-stars include Darrin McGavin as the police officer, a role that was intended for Dean Martin, who quit the film after his breakup with Lewis, and Martha Hyer as Jerry’s love interest. Others in the cast are Horace McMahon, Mary Webster, Richard Bakalyan, Robert Ivers, Joseph Corey, and Frank Gorshin in an early career cameo appearance as a wise guy on the street. The Japanese wrestler The Great Togo appeared as himself. The watchable “The Delicate Delinquent” was a hit at the box office for producer Jerry Lewis and Paramount Pictures.
