What a disaster for Cary Grant to appear in the turkey of a romantic comedy film “Kiss Them for Me.” The usually suave and sophisticated Grant looked very out of place in this poorly written and badly produced low-brow comedy about three Navy pilots on leave in San Fransisco.
Screenwriters Julius J. Epstein and Frederic Wakeman produced a terrible script for the unfortunate trio played by Grant, Ray Walston (in his movie debut), and Larry Blyden. Hilarity and laughs are scarce in this 20th Century Fox product, a box office bomb directed (or, more accurately, thrown together) by Stanley Donen, and produced by Jerry Wald.
Even a talented supporting cast couldn’t help, which included Leif Erickson, Jayne Mansfield, Susy Parker, Werner Klemperer, Harry Carey Jr., Richard Deacon, Maudie Prickett, Jack Mullaney, Kathleen Freeman, Nathaniel Frey, and Frank Nelson as the hotel manager. Nelson is best remembered for his “EEE-Yeeeeesssss” catchphrase on numerous television programs.
