My Review

Elvis Presley stars in “Clambake,” a beach party musical movie where he plays a wealthy young man who wants to experience life outside of his privileged upbringing. He trades places with a water-ski instructor, and falls in love with a woman who is ironically looking for a rich man. The drama, comedy, and musical numbers proceed from there, under the direction of Arthur H. Nadel, with the script by Arthur Brown Jr.

This “The Prince and the Pauper” remake of sorts contains twelve songs, with one of the most popular being “You Don’t Know Me” written by Eddy Arnold and Cindy Walker. Jeff Alexander was in charge of the musical score. “Clambake,” not one of Elvis’ highest quality films, was nonetheless modestly successful at the box office for Levy-Gardner-Levin Productions, Rhodes Pictures, and United Artists.

Co-stars with Elvis Presley include Shelley Fabares, Will Hutchins, Bill Bixby, Gary Merrill, James Gregory, Suzy Kaye, Hal Peary, Sal Riddle, Angelique Pettyjohn, Marg Dusay, and Sue England as the cigarette girl. Appearing in uncredited cameos or extras (early in their careers) are Teri Garr, Corbin Bernsen, and Lee Majors.
