My Review

“The Man Who Came to Dinner” is a screwball comedy about a New York City radio star who slips and falls on the steps of a home of a family in Ohio. He insists on recuperating in their home during the Christmas holiday, with the family agreeing in order not to be sued. Director William Keighley (“The Bride Came C. O. D.” 1941) and screenwriters Julius J. Epstein and Philip G. Epstein adapted the story from the 1939 play of the same name by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman.

The stars of the show include Monte Woolley as the overbearing house guest, Billie Burke and Grant Mitchell as the home owners, Bette Davis as Woolley’s assistant, as well as Ann Sheridan, Jimmy Durante, Richard Travis, Mary Wickes, Elisabeth Fraser, Reginald Gardner, George Barbier, Russell Arms, Edwin Stanley, Charles Drake, and John Ridgely as the radio man. “The Man Who Came to Dinner” was successful at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures.
