Carole Lombard’s final motion picture was “To Be or Not to Be,” a dark comedy about an acting troupe in Nazi-occupied Poland who use their performing talents in the resistance movement. Producer-director Ernest Lubitsch (“Ninotchka” 1939) put together this efficaciously entertaining film with screenwriter Edwin Justus Mayer.
Lombard’s male lead is the legendary Jack Benny, with co-stars Robert Stack, Sig Ruman, Felix Bressart, Lionel Atwill, Stanley Ridges, and Tom Dugan. “To Be or Not to Be” from the Romaine Film Corp. and United Artists was nominated for one Academy Award – Best Musical Scoring (Werner R. Heymann). The film was released four weeks after Carole Lombard perished in an airplane crash at the age of 33, after returning from a war bond tour. She was married to Clark Gable at the time.
