“Ad Astra” is a cerebral science fiction movie that is marked by the subtle and understated performance of Brad Pitt as an astronaut who goes into outer space in search of his long lost father. Director James Gray (“The Immigrant” 2013), who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ethan Gross, kept the picture moving at an even pace that many would find slow. It probably was just about right considering the unfolding story and for character development.
The supporting cast includes veteran movie stars Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones, as well as Liv Tyler, Ruth Nagga, John Ortiz, Greg Bryk, Loren Dean, John Finn, Jamie Kennedy, and LisaGay Hamilton. The watchable “Ad Astra,” which means “to the stars” in Latin, was produced by Brad Pitt and James Gray, was a hit at the box office for 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios.
