My Review

Elvis Presley turns in a respectable performance as a young man searching for a job, and a girl friend, in “King Creole.” This entertaining black and white melodrama was tightly directed by Michael Curtiz (“Casablanca” 1943), from a screenplay by Herbert Baker and Michael V. Gazzo. It was adapted from the 1952 novel “A Stone for Danny Fisher” by Harold Robbins.

Co-stars include Carolyn Jones, Walter Matthau, Dolores Hart, Dean Jagger, Vic Morrow, Paul Stewart, Jan Sheperd, Brain G. Hutton, Jack Grinnage, Dick Winslow, Raymond Bailey, and Gavin Gordon. The watchable “King Creole” was very popular with the movie-going public for producer Hal B. Wallis, Hal Wallis Productions, and Paramount Pictures.

The film was completed just before Presley’s entry into the U. S. Army, which gave his fans something to remember him by for two years. The soundtrack to “King Creole” reached to the number two spot on the Billboard album chart.
