My Review

Andy Griffith found his niche in show business with the role of Will Stockdale, a man from rural Georgia who joins the Air Force. Stockdale’s sergeant’s numerous attempts to make him look foolish backfire, with Will always coming out on top. Griffith’s “country bumpkin” persona (which caused him to be underestimated by those around him) served him well in his future success in films and television programs like “The Andy Griffith Show” (1960-1968) and “Matlock” (1986-1995).

Co-stars include Murray Hamilton, Nick Adams, Myron McCormick, Dub Taylor, Jamie Farr, Howard Smith, Will Hutchins, Jean Wiles, William Fawcett, Raymond Bailey, and Don Knotts, who had a small part as a “dexterity tester.” This pairing of Griffith and Knotts would be the start of a successful show biz team that would be featured in “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960’s and continue off-and-on for decades.

Director Mervyn LeRoy and screenwriter John Lee Mahin based this film on the 1954 novel of the same name by Mac Hyman and the 1955 Broadway play by Ira Levin, which starred Andy Griffith. “No Time for Sergeants” was successful at the box office for producer Mervyn LeRoy and Warner Bros. Pictures.
