My Review

“Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” is a typical low-budget 1950’s science fiction film telling the story of a woman who grows to the height of fifty feet due to an encounter with an extra-terrestrial alien. She then goes on a rampage looking for her unfaithful husband and his girlfriend. The sight of her tearing up a small California town is definitely worth the price of admission.

The director was Nathan Juran (“The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” 1958), who billed himself in the credits as Nathan Hertz, perhaps because of the embarrassment of being associated with a “campy” movie of this sort. Stars of the show include unknown actors like Allison Hayes, William Hudson, Yvette Vickers, George Douglas, Ken Terrell, Otto Wallis, Frank Chase in comic relief as Deputy Charlie, and Michael Ross doing double duty as Tony the bartender and as the giant space alien.

“Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” is so bad that it it actually a watchable movie, something akin to watching a slow-motion train wreck. It was a modest hit at the box office as part of a Saturday double feature (with “War of the Satellites”) from producer Bernard Woolner, Woolner Bros. Pictures, and Allied Artists Pictures Corporation.
