My Review

“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is the story of a scientist named Dr. Henry Jekyll who meddles with the darker side of science, as he brings out his sinister alter-ego Mr. Edward Hyde. The alter-ego’s visits became longer and more crime-filled. The crisis only deepened from there. Director Victor Fleming (“Gone With the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” 1939) expertly put together this glossy version of the old horror story.

Spencer Tracy starred in the title role, which received good reviews but is generally recognized to be an inferior performance to Frederic March’s offering in the 1931 movie of the same name from Paramount Pictures. Co-stars include Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner, Donald Crisp, Barton MacLane, C. Aubrey Smith, Ian Hunter, Peter Godfrey, and Sara Allgood.

The watchable “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” was popular at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It received three Oscar nods including Best Cinematography/Black and White, Best Film Editing, and Best Musical Score. The screenplay by John Lee Mahin, Percy Heath, and Samuel Hoffenstein was based on the 1866 novel “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson.
