The Marx Brothers’ shenanigans continue in “The Big Store.” The storyline has Groucho, Chico, and Harpo trying to save a department store from being stolen away from it owner, played by Margaret Dumont, a frequent co-star in the trio’s films, this one being her last. Director Charles Reisner (“Murder Goes to College” 1937) and screenwriters Nat Perrin and Sid Kuller did a good job on production values, etc.
The film also contains musical numbers and a romantic subplot. Actor-singer Tony Martin helps out in both departments, with an orchestra in the former and with beautiful co-star Virginia Grey in the latter. The supporting cast includes Virginia O’Brien, Douglas Dumbrille, Warren Tannen, Henry Armetta, Anna Demetrio, and Charles Lane and Adrian Morris in uncredited cameos. “The Big Store” was modestly successful escapist entertainment at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
