My Review

“Deadwood: The Movie” is a sequel to the HBO television series that ran from 2004-2006. With most of the original cast returning, the story features saloon owner Al Swearengen clashing with Sheriff Seth Bullock, who in turn has his own conflicts with George Hearst, now a U. S. Senator from California.

Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, and Gerald McRaney retain their own charms as Swearengen, Bullock, and Hearst, respectively. Other actors reprising roles from the series include Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Brad Dourif (Doc), Robin Weigart (Calamity Jane), William Sanderson (E. B. Farnum), Kim Dickins (Joanie), W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority), John Hawkes (Sol), and Dayton Callie as the ill-fated Charlie Utter.

“Deadwood: The Movie” maintains the flavor of the original series, which spanned three seasons and 36 episodes, thanks to fantastic direction by Daniel Minahan and an excellent teleplay written by David Milch, the creator of “Deadwood.” This is a watchable western tv movie that aired on HBO in May, 2019.
