My Review

“High Sierra” is outstanding movie-making from director Raoul Walsh (“The Roaring Twenties” 1939) and screenwriters John Huston and William R. Burnett. Humphrey Bogart plays the role of gangster Roy Earle, who is on the lam and hiding out in a small town in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. This film noir performance propelled Bogart into superstardom under the tutelage of John Huston.

Ida Lupino is her usual charismatic self as the female lead of the picture, Marie Garson, the moll and partner-in-crime to Earle. Lupino’s formidable screen presence, dynamic acting abilities, and sophisticated sex appeal make for good chemistry with Bogie. She received top billing in the opening credits.

Co-stars include Alan Curtis, Arthur Kennedy, Joan Leslie, Henry Hull, Henry Travers, Jerome Cowan, Barton MacLane, Cornel Wilde, Paul Harvey, Isabel Jewel, Minna Gombell, Elizabeth Risdon, Donald MacBride, Willie Best, John Eldridge, Robert Strange, George Meeker, Spencer Charters, and Eddie Acuff in an uncredited cameo as a bus driver.

The watchable film noir crime drama “High Sierra” was a big hit at the box office for executive producer Hal B. Wallis, producer Mark Hellinger, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
