My Review

Roland Young returns once again as Cosmo Topper in the supernatural comedy thriller “Topper Returns.” This third film in the “Topper” series has Topper trying to help out the ghost of Joan Blondell’s character solve her murder. The fun and hijinks were well managed by director Roy Del Ruth (“Broadway Melody of 1938” 1937) from a lucid script by Jonathan Latimer, Gordon Douglas, and Paul Gerard Smith. Latimer later penned teleplays from television series such as “Perry Mason” and “Columbo.”

The cast includes Roland Young, Joan Blondell, Carol Landis, Billie Burke, H.B. Warner, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, Dennis O’Keefe, Patsy Kelly, George Zucco, Ronald MacBride, Rafaela Ottiano, Trevor Bardette, George Lloyd, and Eddie Chandler as Jim the police sergeant. “Topper Returns” was produced by Hal Roach for Hal Roach Studios and United Artists, and was nominated for two Oscars, including special effects and sound. The first two films in the series were “Topper” (1937) and “Topper Takes a Trip” (1938). A television series of the same name ran on CBS (1953-1955) starring Leo G. Carroll.
