My Review

Alfred Hitchcock reached the zenith of excellence and cinematic achievement with the production of “North by Northwest.” This is a tale of mistaken identity, when an advertising executive is pursued across America by mysterious secret agents. They believe he possesses microfilm containing government secrets.

Cary Grant stars as Roger Thornhill, who seems to resemble James Bond more than a businessman. The talented co-stars include Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Jesse Royce Landis, Leo G. Carroll, Martin Landau, Edward Platt, Josephine Hutchinson, Edward Binns, Les Tremayne, Philip Ober, and uncredited cameos by Ned Glass as a ticket seller and Maudie Prickett as Elsie the maid.

The very watchable “North by Northwest” has an abundance of thrills, chills, and spills, and was nominated for three Oscars for film editing, production design, and the screenplay. It did not win a single Academy Award, but was a big hit in theatrical release for producer Alfred Hitchcock and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The outstanding cinematography by Robert Burks deserves honorable mention. “North by Northwest” is always on everyone’s list as one of the greatest motion pictures of all time.
