My Review

“Pillow Talk” is a romantic comedy starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson as neighbors who share a telephone party line. Doris constantly overhears his breezy talk to his numerous girl friends, and is resistant when Hudson sets his sights on her. Sparks really fly when their mutual friend Tony Randall finds out, as he also has a crush on Day. This fun-filled movie was well constructed by director Michael Gordon (“Woman in Hiding” 1950), with an imaginative screenplay by Stanley Shapiro, Maurice Richlin, Russell Rouse, and Clarence Greene.

Also, producer Ross Hunter exerted his influence as he was always known for glossy productions. The cast includes Rock Hudson, Doris Day, Tony Randall, Thelma Ritter, Nick Adams, Julia Meade, Allen Jenkins, Lee Patrick, Marcel Dalio, Mary McCarty, Jacqueline Beer, and Hayden Rorke, who later became famous as Col. Alfred Bellows on the NBC sitcom “I Dream of Jeanne” (1965-1970). “Pillow Talk” was a big hit at the box office for producers Ross Hunter and Martin Melcher (Day’s hubby), Arwin Productions, Avernus Productions, and Universal Pictures.

“Pillow Talk” was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one for Best Screenplay. Non-winning nominees include Best Actress (Day), Best Supporting Actress (Ritter), and Best Musical Scoring (Frank De Vol). Two more pictures came out with Hudson, Day, and Randall, which were “Lover Come Back” (1961) and “Send Me No Flowers” (1964). This one was filmed in the Eastmancolor process.
