My Review

Doris Day experienced a rare box office failure back in 1959 with “It Happened to Jane.” The film tells the story of her lobster business in Maine undermined by a railroad. Many come to her aid when her dilemma was reported on television, including celebrities and game show hosts. This comedy was well directed by Richard Quine (“The World of Suzie Wong” 1960), from a quality screenplay by Norman Katkov and Max Wilk. The film is a good showcase for Day’s effervescent personality.

Doris Day’s co-stars include Jack Lemmon, Steve Forrest, Ernie Kovacs, Mary Wickes, Max Showalter, Russell Brown, and Dave Garroway. There was an appearance by the “I’ve Got a Secret” television show with host Gary Moore and panelists Bill Cullen, Jayne Meadows, Betsy Palmer, Harry Morgan. Some uncredited cameo appearances featured Jack Carter, Terry Melcher (Day’s son), Michael J. Pollard, and Gene Rayburn playing himself as a news reporter.

Doris Day even performed several musical numbers, including “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” The musical supervisor was George Duning. “It Happened to Jane” may have been a flop at the box office, but is actually a very fun, entertaining, and watchable film from producer Martin Melcher (Day’s husband), Arwin Productions, and Columbia Pictures.
