“Joker: Folie a Deux” is a musical psychological thriller film continuing the story of villain Arthur Fleck which began in 2019’s “Joker.” Director Todd Phillips (“A Star Is Born” 2018) at least deserves credit for continuing the nihilistic theme of his original “Joker.” Co-writing the screwy screenplay with Scott Silver, he did instilled fair production values in the movie. However, the dark theme combined with musical numbers does not make for watchable entertainment.
The two stars of the film, Joaquin Phoenix as Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga as his love interest, actually deliver in the musical department. Phoenix apparently had some vocal training. Co-stars include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Steve Coogan, Ken Leung, Zazie Beetz, Harry Lawtey, Leigh Gill, Jacob Lofland, and Bill Smitrovich as Judge Herman Rothwax.
“Joker: Folie a Deux” has had only modest success at the box office, which is not enough to cover the large production budget and advertising expenses for producer Todd Phillips, Domain Entertainment, Joint Effort, and Warner Bros. Pictures. “Folie a Deux” is French for “madness for two,” which pretty well describes this silly and unwatchable film.
